Budget Forwards For Gameweek 7: Gonzalo, Barry Or Calvert-Lewin?

Barry leads the chance numbers, Gonzalo has the kinder fixtures, and Calvert-Lewin offers another £6.0m route. We compare the budget forwards for Gameweek 7.

Illustration of Gonzalo García in a Fulham shirt beside the FPL Player Stats Gameweek 7 budget forwards comparison of Gonzalo, Thierno Barry and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Thierno Barry has scored in successive gameweeks and leads this shortlist for expected goals, yet Gonzalo García is the forward we would buy for the next three matches if the budget stretches to £6.1m.

That is a judgement about the opportunities ahead, because Fulham face Hull City and Coventry City while Everton meet Chelsea and Arsenal.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin belongs in the discussion at £6.0m, with two goals, an assist and almost identical playing time to Gonzalo, but his next fixtures offer less reason to prioritise a new purchase.

For existing owners, the decision is less clear cut, particularly when selling Barry would mean paying more to move away from the strongest chance record of the three.

The figures below cover Gameweeks 1 to 6 of 2026/27 and were checked against official FPL data on 13 October, when Gameweek 6 remained provisional and had not yet been marked as checked.

The Season Evidence

Thierno Barry: £5.7m, 26 points, 502 minutes, 4.40 xG and 0.16 xA.

Gonzalo García: £6.1m, 16 points, 511 minutes, 3.00 xG and 0.59 xA.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin: £6.0m, 24 points, 509 minutes, 3.00 xG and 0.08 xA.

All three have started six times, so Barry's advantage in expected goals has not come from playing substantially more football.

Combining expected goals and expected assists gives him 4.56 xGI, compared with Gonzalo's 3.59 and Calvert-Lewin's 3.08.

The same order holds after adjusting for minutes, at 0.82, 0.63 and 0.54 xGI per 90 respectively.

These are measures of the chances recorded so far, rather than predictions of how many points each player will score against the next opponents.

Gonzalo García Has The Best Immediate Opening

Buying a forward after five consecutive blanks takes some conviction, and Gonzalo's 16 points are the weakest return in this comparison.

His recent opportunities give us a reason to look beyond those returns, with 0.69 xG against Manchester United followed by 0.67 at Ipswich Town.

That does not mean he is owed a goal, but it is more encouraging than a run of blanks accompanied by very little involvement near goal.

TFA's Gonzalo García scout report, based on his earlier work at Real Madrid, describes a forward who creates separation before moving back into dangerous finishing positions.

Our analysis of the Manchester United match describes him leading the line and having an early chance to score as Fulham advanced through a passive defence.

The attraction now is the combination of that involvement and the schedule, with Hull City at home and Coventry City away both rated two by FPL, followed by Aston Villa away at three.

Newcastle United at home in Gameweek 10 also carries a rating of three, although the trip to Manchester City in Gameweek 11 gives managers a natural point to reassess.

His minutes still deserve attention, since his last three appearances lasted 76, 79 and 86 minutes, leaving less time to convert chances than Barry has recently enjoyed.

We would accept that tradeoff for a new purchase targeting Gameweeks 7 to 9, while recognising that a favourable fixture rating cannot guarantee better finishing.

Thierno Barry's Numbers Make Him A Credible Hold

Barry has the cheapest price, the most points and the strongest scoring opportunities of this trio, which makes him difficult to dismiss simply because Everton's fixtures become harder.

His three goals have come from 4.40 xG, with 0.52 against Ipswich Town and 0.90 at Hull City accompanying his goals in the last two matches.

He has also played 90, 90, 90 and 85 minutes across his last four appearances, giving his owners a strong recent record of time on the pitch.

Across Gameweeks 4 to 6, the gap in attacking involvement is smaller than the season totals suggest, with Barry recording 0.73 xGI per 90 and Gonzalo 0.72.

Barry accumulated that involvement across 265 minutes, compared with Gonzalo's 241, so the similar rate should not obscure the difference in playing time.

Barry and Gonzalo in FPLPlayerStats on 13 October 2026: recent statistics cover Gameweeks 4 to 6, fixtures cover Gameweeks 7 to 9, and official xP is a Gameweek 7 forecast rather than a three-match projection.

Everton host Chelsea before visiting Arsenal and Newcastle United, with FPL difficulty ratings of four, five and three, making this a demanding stretch in which to expect his recent returns to continue.

That schedule matters more for someone choosing a new forward than for an owner who can keep Barry through it and reach Coventry City at home in Gameweek 10.

If £5.7m is the limit, or the £0.4m saved against Gonzalo improves another starting position, Barry remains a reasonable choice on his chance record and minutes.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin Needs A Different Case

Calvert-Lewin's 24 points and 509 minutes offer a credible alternative, but Gonzalo matches his 3.00 xG and adds substantially more expected assists.

The Leeds United forward has played the full 90 minutes in each of his last two appearances, so there is no recent reduction in playing time to explain his two blanks.

He recorded no xG at Arsenal in Gameweek 6, although one difficult away match should not erase the opportunities he had accumulated beforehand.

Our analysis of Leeds United's win over Newcastle United explains how he acted as a target for nearby teammates to collect his knockdowns.

For FPL buyers, the reservation is that Manchester United at home is followed by trips to Sunderland and AFC Bournemouth, rated four, three and three.

He therefore offers neither Barry's lower price and stronger xG nor Gonzalo's immediate fixture advantage, which leaves him third for a new purchase from this shortlist.

Existing owners can still justify holding, particularly with consecutive full matches behind him and Tottenham Hotspur at home in Gameweek 10, rather than spending a transfer purely because he sits behind the other two in this comparison.

Who Would We Buy For Gameweek 7?

Gonzalo is our first choice for a new purchase covering Gameweeks 7 to 9, provided his £6.1m price fits and the move improves a position that actually needs attention.

Barry is the stronger option when the budget is tighter, while his recent minutes and chance quality give current owners a good reason to hold through the tougher fixtures.

Calvert-Lewin remains a defensible hold, but we would need a clearer squad benefit to buy him ahead of either alternative.

The differences are not strong enough for us to recommend a points hit simply to switch between these three, especially when the player being sold still has regular starts and credible attacking involvement.

All three were listed as available in the official FPL snapshot checked on 13 October, although that does not guarantee a start.
